INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT

On top of the door resides a black brick completely lost in shadow. A mechanical click sounds and the brick is illuminated into a crimson red glow reading “On-Air”. The sign gives an electrical hiss that rivals the irritating frequency of a cicada.

WYATT WENT, an eccentric disk jockey with a brash inquisitiveness. His determined fascination with the odd and paranormal has made him the perfect host of the nightly radio show “The Uncannyon Valley”.

Wyatt swivels in his chair resetting it forward towards the dashboard. He gives a quick adjustment to his microphone, places his headphones on and taps a button on the console.

WYATT WENT

Well, well, well it appears the witching hour is upon us once more. Thanks to all you crazy insomniacs out there for tuning in.

Wyatt takes out an electronic cigarette and gives it a deep huff before exhaling a cloud of vapor.

WYATT WENT (CONT’D)

Sometimes I wonder what keeps you crazy kids up at night. Maybe it’s hard to snooze with the moon as full as it is tonight. I however don’t mind it. I think its been dark enough in recent days.

Wyatt pulls back from his chair, he grabs a pen and proceeds to scribble something down on a nearby notepad.

WYATT WENT (CONT’D)

As protocol with this show, we’ll now open the line and hope to hear a chilling encounter from one of you devoted listeners out there.

Wyatt fiddles the pen in between his fingers. A dead air consumes the tight confines of the room. A sudden phone rings with a harsh intrusion. Wyatt inhales his e-cig again releasing it with a smooth blow from his pursed-lips. The phone chirps again as Wyatt silences it with a jab to the console.

WYATT WENT (CONT’D)

Hello there, and welcome to the Uncannyon Valley. May we know who’s on the line.

CLAIRE V.O (softly)

It’s Claire.

WYATT WENT

Well Claire if you wouldn’t mind speaking up. I’m sure we’d all like to listen to whatever story our little Claire-voyant caller has in store. Mind telling us where you’re from.

CLAIRE V.O

I’m from Canyon Valley.

WYATT WENT

So it seems we have a native. Buckle in everyone this one might hit close to home. Alright Claire you’re on the air now what is your story.

EXT. SHERMAN FOREST – DAY

A strewn symphony of every shade of green, the dark thick moss, the delicate light leafs; the compact grove remains perfectly still.

CLAIRE jogs in light sporty attire along the curved pathway and paces to a halt. She commits deep controlled breaths as she surveys the area.

CLAIRE V.O

I use to do cross country in high school, so it has become pretty routine of me to begin my mornings with a jog.

Claire walks deeper down the path.

CLAIRE V.O

Typically I would run with a friend down the trail in the Sherman Forest. However, she was busy so I went by myself.

WYATT WENT V.O

I see. So what did our brave little Claire do? Did you stray from the path and get lost? Did you see something you regret seeing or maybe realized you weren’t alone? Please excite us.

CLAIRE V.O (monotone)

I don’t know what I saw.

WYATT WENT V.O

Please continue.

Claire fiddles with her phone and places it back into her fitness armband. She looks straight ahead. An indiscernible dark mass seemed to obstruct part of the path ahead. Claire cautiously tiptoes ahead to get a closer look at the foreign object. She stops dead in her tracks. The shadow erects itself into the height of a person. THE CREATURE is draped in a Ghillie Poncho. The face concealed behind a plague doctor’s mask with protruding deer antlers looming precariously from the mask.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT
WYATT WENT

Now that is out of the ordinary. What did you do?

CLAIRE V.O

I couldn’t do anything. It was like I was paralyzed, I couldn’t take my eyes off whatever it was.

WYATT WENT

Well Claire if you ask me it sounds like you might be very fortunate to be making this call right now. How does our beast not notice you?

EXT. SHERMAN FOREST – DAY
CLAIRE V.O

It’s strange, but I feel like it had noticed me.

The creature slowly pans his head and stops right before Claire enters its field of vision. The creature unhurriedly grabs a woven basket filled with wild mushrooms and eloquently marches deeper to the foliage on the right side of the trail.

CLAIRE V.O

Maybe I’m delusional. It was frightening beyond belief that I get numb just thinking about it but in the moment I swear their was a gentleness coming from whatever that thing was.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT
WYATT WENT

I think you’re right about one thing Claire, you were certainly delusional. Well I would recommend not entering the woods alone for now. A lesson for anyone out there. Thanks for the tale miss Claire and welcome to the Uncannyon Valley.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT

Wyatt swivels in his chair and presses the button on his console.

WYATT WENT

Hello there and welcome to the Uncannyon Valley. May we know who’s on the line.

BRIAN V.O

Yup. This is Brian.

WYATT WENT

Hello Brian. What’s got you calling in the dead of the night. Share what’s on your mind.

BRIAN V.O

Yeah, um I’d like to talk about a story you had on here a few weeks ago.

WYATT WENT

Which one would that be Brian? Alien craft sightings in Pasadena or maybe the widow ghost in Tuscaloosa?

BRIAN V.O (Chuckling)

No, sir. I actually want to talk about that strange creature in the Sherman Forest.

WYATT WENT

Ahh, yes. Who could forget the little oddity from little miss Claire-voyance? Why is this story so striking that we need to discuss it once more Brian?

BRIAN V.O

I can’t believe I’m saying it. Whatever that thing is, it’s real.

WYATT WENT

And what makes you say that Brian?

EXT. SHERMAN FOREST – DAY

BRIAN hikes up the trail equipped with a large travelers pack with a leaky Canteen hanging from it. Brian has a camera around his neck.

BRIAN V.O

I’ll admit, I’m one to be skeptical of the tall tales and urban legends you peddle on this broadcast. However, my family had been picnicking in the west reserve of the forest so I guess curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to check the trail out.

WYATT WENT V.O

Now you got me curious Brian. Curiosity can be a pretty wicked thing, maybe even more dangerous than fear. Where you afraid, Brian?

BRIAN V.O

I’m not frightened by ghost stories, Wyatt. I didn’t expect to find anything out there.

WYATT WENT V.O

It sounds like you did.

BRIAN V.O

Yes. I saw that thing. Exactly as she described it.

The creature wanders along the path in front of Brian. Brian quickly grabs his camera with shaking hands he snaps a picture. The creature stops for brief second, but ultimately retreats farther down the trail.

BRIAN V.O

I was dumbfounded at that point. I Had to get back to my family, couldn’t let them stay near the forest knowing that some monster? Or creep? Whoever is out there stalking that trail.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT

Wyatt blows out the vapor from his e-cig he holds in his left hand.

WYATT WENT

Now we’re getting something new and interesting, Brian. Please be sure to send me a copy of the pics to my P.O. Box would love to get a glimpse. Now what do you suppose this is out there?

BRIAN V.O

I know your audience has taken it upon themselves to suggest a few theories about what’s going on. They call it El Sueño Fauno because of the deer-like appearance and his presence seems like something of a dream.

WYATT WENT

Or nightmare.

BRIAN V.O

I’ve seen it though. It’s human. At least in how it acts. How it moves. I don’t know if this is some sick joke or some sicko out there but I think I’m going to have to sleep with one eye open.

WYATT WENT

Well thanks Brian, glad you joined us on air.

Wyatt clicks to end the call. A thunderous bang comes from outside the station. Wyatt rests his headphones on the dashboard and approaches the door outside. Wyatt peers into the outside trees cloaked in pitch darkness. Wyatt breathes through his nose and then shuts the door.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT

An eerie synth track plays in the studio. Wyatt leans on the back wall shrouded in shadow. He strolls over to his chair and prepares to return to the broadcast before pressing a button on the console.

WYATT WENT

Welcome back all you glorious creatures of the night. Loyal listeners will be well aware of Canyon Valley’s very own cryptid sighting. I’m happy to announce soon we can all rest easy. This weekend I’m sponsoring a search for El Sueño Fauno. Come join me and other fellow curious cats as we comb the forest in hopes of discovering what hideous truth beckons us out there. Be sure to check out the Uncannyon valley website for details and until then stay safe, what you don’t know might kill you.

EXT. SHERMAN FOREST ENTRANCE – NIGHT

A blaze of lanterns radiate a sheet of light that overwhelms the dark backdrop. A GROUP OF PEOPLE begin to patrol the area carrying the lanterns into the void.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT

The red “On-Air” sign lights above the door.

WYATT WENT

Apologies for my absent of late, it’s been difficult to reach the station due to recent activity in the area. For those unaware of Canyon Valley local news, the devastating Sherman Forest fire has finally been subdued by the fire department. My respect goes out to the brave men and women who tirelessly worked to extinguish the flames.

Wyatt pauses. Dead air fills the room as an elongated moment of silence resonates.

WYATT WENT (CONT’D)

This also leads into the conclusion of our tale on the beast or man known as El Sueño Fauno. When the police went to investigate the cause of the fire they discovered some rather interesting findings.

Wyatt puts his electronic cigarette to his lips. He slowly builds tension sucking in the vapor before billowing it out calmly.

EXT.SHERMAN FOREST – DAY

A COUPLE OF POLICE OFFICERS trek through the remains of the forest. The ground darkened with ash, and the trees littered leaving a maze of dark bark. They approach a tree that appears to have some note attach to it.

WYATT WENT V.O

Amidst the desolate sight of the now rotten forest, the police discovered at the sight of one of the remaining trees in a cleared area the emperor’s clothes them self, the attire that was dawned by the beast.

The officers examine the neatly folded grassy suite, and the mask with antlers sticking out of it staring with confusion. One officer grabs the note attached and look down upon it.

INT. KON BROADCAST STATION – NIGHT
WYATT WENT

A letter was uncovered and had quite the unexpected message. “My sanctuary has been tainted and defiled. The hunt for your creature must end at an anticlimax as I feel I’ve suffered the consequence enough. The world is inhabited by many people, things, and beasts that are misunderstood; leave them the solace to live. To Mister Wyatt Went, and my undesired audience I wish you peaceful dreams, knowing the beast has been slain.”

Wyatt pauses the room drops deadly silent again.

WYATT WENT (CONT’D)

Well folks, I think this wraps up the mystery behind El Sueño Fauno. A Monster that roamed the forest in our very own Canyon Valley. Thanks to all who contributed to a riveting tale of mystery. A story that is sure to keep me up at night wondering if I really slain a monster, or if I create one.

The “On-Air” sign lights off and the door outside the studio is consumed by darkness.
